A DREAM grey nomad holiday has turned into a nightmare for a Far Northern couple after their car and caravan rolled on a remote highway, killing the 88-year-old male driver.

He and his wife, 73, were heading west on the Warrego Highway just outside Miles in southwest Queensland when the crash occurred about 4.40pm on Wednesday.

The couple are from Wongaling Beach on the Cassowary Coast but have been travelling around Queensland.

South West Region police Acting Supt Sharee Cumming said the man had initially survived the crash, but then suffered a medical episode at the scene and could not be revived.

Investigations suggest he had tried to correct the vehicles after they had travelled onto the wrong side of the road, but they rolled.

She said forensic crash unit officers were looking at a number of factors which may have contributed including fatigue, inattention or the start of the subsequent medical condition.

“That time of the afternoon, driving west ... the chances are he may have had the sun in his eyes which may also be a factor,” she said.

It is understood there were no witnesses to the crash, but several other motorists came across the crash seen soon after it took place.

The driver’s wife was uninjured.

Acting Supt Cumming urged all retirees travelling on country roads to be aware of the conditions.
