Bagging plastic profits

-

THE Queensland Government’s initiative to ban plastic shopping bags from July 1 this year is a move in the right direction. However, I was surprised to learn customers will still be able to buy plastic bags at 15c each.

Apparently these bags are not designed as single use and are more durable, thereby making it quite legitimate for supermarkets to supply these at a price. Interestingly enough, the cost of producing these bags is 9c a piece.

A solution could be that any profit made be donated back to local environmental groups. Another alternative could simply be to have on hand the cardboard boxes grocery items originally arrive in.

While I fully support the government’s efforts it would be comforting to know the only true winner from this new scheme was the environment. Maree Callaway, Clifton Beach
