Juniors do Far North proud in narrow defeat

- SAMUEL DAVIS

QUEENSLAND’S Under 16s have struck out at the Australian Baseball Championship in Blacktown despite strong performances from a promising Cairns trio.

The junior Bandits’ thrilling 12-11 loss to South Australia on Wednesday spelled the end of their chances of advancing to the final round.

Former Cairns Baseball development officer Al Connors said poor pitching cost the Far North’s Riki Ward, Kyle Ashby and Brock Wollin a shot at the silverware.

“It’s pretty disappointing for the 16s,” Connors said. “They gave away far too many walks.”

“Riki did exceptionally well. He’s a pretty confident kid.

“Kyle had some good opportunities and didn’t look out of his depth, which is pleasing, while Brock had a start as pitcher and relieved.”

Cairns pitcher Kaiki Furutani-Burns and infielder Ryota Kusumoto advanced to the final round with the Under 18s squad.

“Kaiki picked himself up after an off game and threw four innings against Victoria Blue and only gave up one run while Ryota hit a double and played well,” Connors said.

“Both of those guys are keen to explore the college (baseball) pathway.”

The tournament finishes on Sunday.
