Keys theft repulsive to owners

- GRACE MASON

A MT Sheridan woman whose brand-new car was stolen and crashed over the weekend said knowing thieves had been just inches from her as they stole her keys was “creepy”.

Anne and Philip Fang Yuen were asleep when the juvenile offenders broke into their Malabar St home and took the keys from a table inside their bedroom.

Mrs Fang Yuen said they didn't even realise their sixmonth-old Toyota Lexus was gone until they were woken by police at their door about 3am.

Not even their pet dog, who sleeps in their bedroom, stirred.

“I just hate the thought of someone being in our bedroom,” she said.

“It’s just creepy someone was only six inches away from me.”

The cafe owners began keeping their valuables in the bedroom at night two months ago after another break-in.

They said this latest incident, which has written their car, was devastating.

Mrs Fang Yuen said they had been told by police the offenders had driven the car at speeds of up to 200km/h during their “joy ride”, which extended to Babinda and Yarrabah during the night.

They later crashed it into an Earlville median strip.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do about it. All these kids just go to court and walk away,” she said.

“I feel sorry for the Queensland police.”

Mr Fang Yuen said his heart also went out to other car theft victims who, unlike them, could not afford insurance.
