Not one hump but two

-

I am very disappointed with the 500 word limit on the Cairns Regional Council’s form for the proposed changes to Abbott St traffic flow between Spence St and Wharf St.

They allow only three options, which I firmly believe, is very narrow minded. They allow no further comments or advise that others may have.

Installing traffic lights, (they say), is costly at approximately $300,000. I say that is a waste of money because many pedestrians completely ignore the traffic lights in any case and run when they can, or walk across completely oblivious to traffic.

They want to make one lane each way, look at how that has caused chaos in McLeod St and thrown extra traffic onto Sheridan and Grafton Sts.

They want to remove the pedestrian crossing. This is a bad move. My suggestion is to install two speed humps spaced approximately one metre apart, each 10 metres before the pedestrian crossing on either side of Abbott St and keep the two lanes open.

This will slow down any vehicle, very quickly, but will also allow the traffic to move ahead at a safe pace. Transport vehicles will need to slow considerably over these. Bear in mind also, that there is a 50 km/h speed limit in the CBD.

Finally, in response to making new parking spaces in the middle of Abbott St, build the proposed car park bounded by Lake, Hartley and Grafton Sts to accommodate several hundred more car parks which can also be easily accessed from not only the Casino, but many other ventures within the CBD.
