WEATHER FORECAST

-

CYCLONIC activity in Australia’s west has been blocking significant wet season weather from reaching the Far North in recent weeks, forecasters say.

While some showers are expected in the region tomorrow and Wednesday, duty forecaster Lauren Murphy said the monsoon trough remains over the Indian Ocean and would have no impact here any time soon.

“The cyclones have actually been cutting off the monsoon flow and preventing it from extending further eastwards,” she said.

“There are no signs over the next week so we’re relying on local rainfall and southeasterly surges.”

Only about 10mm is predicted tomorrow, although the southeasterly flow should be enough to bring temperatures down a few degrees.

The mercury is forecast to hit 36C in Cairns today with the humidity also expected to begin building.

Although temperatures of 35C were predicted yesterday, Cairns only reached about 30C.

Innisfail was slightly warmer at 33C, while Mareeba was a far warmer 37C.

Ms Murphy said a ridge up the northern tropical coast had kept the weather fine.

She said cloud was expected to begin building later today.

There is also a chance of storms developing in the area throughout the week.
