Fa’anana nets a state spot
Cairns Netball operations manager Kym McPhee-Smith says all the hard work has paid dividends for Rachel Fa’anana (above) after she secured selection in Queensland’s squad for the under-19 National Netball Championships later this year. Four Far North junior netballers — Fa’anana, Wendy Stafford, Claudia Philp and Chantelle Tikitau — travelled to Brisbane to participate in the Netball Queensland under-17 and under-19 squad training camp recently.
CAIRNS netballer Rachel Fa’anana has won praise for her hard work after winning selection in Queensland’s squad for the under-19 National Championships this year.
Four Far North juniors – Fa’anana, Wendy Stafford, Claudia Philp and Chantelle Tikitau – travelled to Brisbane recently to participate in the Netball Queensland under-17 and under-19 training camp.
Fa’anana, who plays for the Marlin Coast Marlins and Cairns Saints locally, was the only one to make the cut.
“On behalf of Cairns Netball, we are so proud of the four ladies that have trialled over the two months,” said Cairns Netball operations manager Kym McPhee-Smith.
“Rach has worked extremely hard and she is deserving of this achievement.”
The squad of 17 will train across the next three Sundays before a training camp on February 10 and 11, after which the final squad of 12 and training partners will be confirmed.
Netball Queensland’s Richard McInnes said finalising the 2018 squads was tough.
“It is pleasing to see the inclusion of Rachel Fa’anana from Cairns in the squad, reinforcing the strength of our regional competitions,” he said.
