Warning on aggro canines

- ANDREA FALVO andrea.falvo@news.com.au

MAREEBA Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore has reiterated the importance of reporting any incident involving an aggressive dog following two separate canine attacks in the one day.

A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman confirmed two people had been treated at the Mareeba Hospital’s emergency department with dog bites on Wednesday.

“A 12-year-old was discharged around 4pm and a 22year-old male was discharged after 8pm,” she said.

A Mareeba Shire Council spokesman said the attacks had not yet been reported to council. Cr Gilmore said owners could face serious fines if their dog was found roaming at large or if their animal was not registered.

“Council takes dog attacks very seriously,” he said. “We will not tolerate people letting a dog wander at large harming other animals or people.

“There are laws in place to protect our community and penalties apply if people do not follow these requirements.”

In the Mareeba Shire dogs must be registered and microchipped when they reach 12 weeks of age and/or within 14 days of new ownership.
