HERE WE GO AGAIN

RESIDENTS are being urged to heed warnings and stay away from swollen waterways as a major weather event impacts the Far North over the next two days.

Falls of up to 300mm have been predicted to occur in some spots and flood watches have been issued for every river between the Cassowary Coast and Mossman.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Rick Threlfall said a slow-moving southeasterly change was behind the predicted downpour, which is expected to soak the region today and tomorrow.

He said the Cassowary Coast would cop the brunt of it but rainy conditions would extend between Cardwell and Cooktown.

Cairns police Senior Sergeant James Coate pleaded with residents to stay safe while reiterating the “if it’s flooded, forget it” message.

“We are in the wet season and these types of weather events do regularly occur, but we would just ask people not to take unnecessary risks and put themselves, their families or emergency services in danger,” he said.

Last night the flood watch included the Mossman, Daintree, Mulgrave, Russell, Johnstone, Tully, Murray and Herbert rivers.

A strong wind warning was also in place for the Cairns coast today.

A storm warning had also been issued for the Tablelands including Mareeba, Atherton and Millaa Millaa, with concerns over flash flooding.
