Pair pinned as future stars

- JORDAN GERRANS

THE inaugural Cairns Junior Youth Cup looks to have unearthed a pair of Far North tenpin bowling stars of the future.

Upwards of 45 bowlers descended on Go Bowling over the weekend for the inaugural running of the tournament, with Cairns’ Bailey Miller and Mikayla Cahill impressing.

Go Bowling Cairns employee Cahill claimed the open girls’ division with a comefrom-behind victory over Chloe Jones from Townsville.

Cahill caused an upset over Jones, the second-ranked bowler in Australia, in an exciting final on Sunday.

Experienced Brisbane bowler Matt Clague took out the open men’s division, defeating Cairns’ Miller in the decider.

Go Bowling centre manager Jonathon Packham said Miller and Cahill were two names to remember in the sport.

“It was a huge victory for Mikayla and an incredible final,” he said. “Chloe is a wonderful player and the pair of them were fantastic throughout the weekend.

“Bailey Miller is a real upand-comer at just 14 years of age. He is going to be a star of the future, there is no two ways about it.”

Miller collected the highest score over the two days of competition, bowling an outstanding 290 on Saturday.

The finalists needed to compete in 12 games on Saturday and seven on Sunday before the finals started.
