Pub set to shout for new Dundee

- JAMES MACSMITH

THE home of the original Crocodile Dundee film is being formally pitched to government and movie makers as the location for any potential movie reboot.

Belinda Murphy, the mayor of McKinlay Shire Council where the Walkabout Creek scenes were shot for the original Dundee movie, and her fellow councillors, will write to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in a bid to make the new flick a reality.

Fans across the world were left disappointed earlier this week when a teaser for a new Dundee movie featuring Chris Hemsworth and Margot Robbie was revealed as a clever ad for Tourism Australia.

But Cr Murphy, who is also Queensland’s Outback Tourism Board chairwoman, has not been deterred. Instead, she is determined to bring Mick Dundee and the gang back to regional Queensland where it all began for one of Australia’s most successful movies.

“We would welcome the chance for another Crocodile Dundee movie to be made here,” she told News Corp.

“It is something I know everyone in the region would get behind. It could really take the Dundee movies to another level, it would not take anything away from the original and could expose it to a whole new audience.

“It would be such a boon for the whole of our region and my councillors and I plan to write a letter to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk offering our region as the location. I would love to see Queensland get behind it and really invest in this region.

“It is such an iconic movie, Walkabout Creek is such an iconic location and there is a great chance here to build on that for the good of so many people. There is no reason why we can’t all get behind it.”

Cr Murphy said she was excited about the prospect of Chris Hemsworth starring in a new Dundee movie.

The Walkabout Creek Hotel, where many of the original Dundee movie’s most memorable scenes were shot remains one of the McKinlay region’s most popular tourist attractions.

Publican Debbie Wust said interest in the hotel had exploded since rumours of another Dundee film began.

“I have people writing to me and calling from all over the world asking how they can get here,” she said.

Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason said the massive interest in the possibility of a Crocodile Dundee remake could lead to a renaissance of Australian film.

“Producers will have clocked the huge response at the prospect of seeing talent like Chris Hemsworth, Margot Robbie, Isla Fisher and Ruby Rose playing Australian characters in film,” he said.

In an interview with British media, Hemsworth reiterated his interest in joining the cast of any potential reboot.
