The good oil on hemp

WHEN people hear the word “hemp” their mind usually jumps straight to marijuana.

But Cairns hemp company Pure Delight worker Callen Crichton told Well and Good there was a world of difference.

“Hemp is a variety of the plant, but it has no THC in it. THC is the chemical that does what marijuana does, but hemp doesn’t have any in it,” Mr Crichton said.

“What hemp does have is a number of uses – it can be made into bio plastic, clothing and rope. What we deal with at Pure Delight is the seed.”

Mr Crichton said the seed could be used to harvest hemp oil and it could also be turned into protein powders.

“The oil is very nutritious. It has high levels of omega 3 and omega 6,” he said.

“Imagine a flax or a fish oil, except with better balance of essential fats. Plus, it’s vegan.

“The seed itself is very high in protein, so when we have the seed with the hull it’s about 95 per cent protein.”

He said using hemp oil in skin products was what both he and his wife, Pure Delight director Tatiana Crichton, were most passionate about.

“We make body butters and face creams,” he said.

“The essential fats in hemp oil are really good for the skin.”
