Dynamic Dixon powers into leadership role

- JORDAN GERRANS

CAIRNS Saints junior Charlie Dixon’s rise has taken another step as he was promoted to Port Adelaide’s leadership group for the 2018 season yesterday afternoon.

The Far North product is coming off his best season in the AFL, kicking 49 goals as he led Port to the finals, where they had their season ended by West Coast.

Dixon single-handedly kept the Power in the match in the opening half, kicking his team’s first three goals and applying some brilliant tackles while his teammates struggled.

His inaccuracy in front of the sticks – 3.6 – was the only blemish in his game.

The 27-year-old will be joined in the Power’s leadership group by former Brisbane Lions skipper and Port recruit Tom Rockliff.

Port Adelaide general manager of football Chris Davies said the leadership positions were voted for by the playing group and Dixon had received his teammates’ tick of approval after two seasons in South Australia.

“Charlie has done everything right since arriving here and has made a significant impression throughout the club,” Davies said. “He’s a strong, positive influence.”

Dixon will be joined in the leadership group by Travis Boak, who has been endorsed as captain for a club-record sixth AFL season, while Ollie Wines will again serve as vicecaptain, and Brad Ebert, Hamish Hartlett and Tom Jonas retain their leadership roles.

Davies said the seven players’ leadership credentials were beyond question, with their challenge from here on in to deliver.
