Ray of light for fishos
Cast a line on sunny weekend
KEEN fishermen will be able to head out on the water for the first time in a lengthy spell with blue skies and calmer waters forecast this weekend.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Harry Clark said the rain was about to ease up for the foreseeable future.
“There’s high pressure along the coast and strong winds on the waters that will reduce across the weekend,” Mr Clark said.
“Saturday looks good for people who want to go out, but Sunday is looking even better.”
He said the monsoon trough that brought heavy rains to the Far North would move offshore today, bringing warmer and sunnier days to Cairns at the weekend.
Cairns Spear N Tackle owner Peter Williams said plenty of fish would be available in the coming days.
“The barra season has just opened and the rain would’ve stirred them up,” he said.
“The Trinity Inlet will have plenty of great barra opportunities this weekend.”
Mr Williams said the local creeks would also be full of fish after the last couple of weeks of rain.
“Barr Creek and creeks near Wangetti will be opened up after the rain,” he said.
Mr Williams said fishermen didn’t need boats to get a good catch, but just had to find the best spots to land fish from.
“You can always go to the Marlin Marina or you can go along Wharf One – that way there’s some cover if it does rain while you’re out.”
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a shower or two for Saturday, but a mostly sunny day on Sunday with the chance of rain dropping from 50 per cent to 10 per cent.
Temperatures are expected to stay between 22C and 31C during the weekend.
The warm, dry conditions are expected to continue into the coming week.
