Suns cast a giant shadow in North

- JORDAN GERRANS

THE Gold Coast Suns are taking their partnership with North Queensland very seriously.

It is an important couple of years for the Suns and their association with the north of the state, as they host a preseason game in Townsville in the coming weeks, a Round 1 contest in Cairns in March and an AFL premiership season clash in Townsville in 2019 or 2020.

Showing their strong interest in the region, Suns chief executive Mark Evans travelled to the Far North on Saturday for Cairns’ Biggest Sign On Day at the Cairns Convention Centre.

“A Round 1 game in Cairns presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase the region,” Evans said. “For the eighth year in a row we will play an AFL premiership match in Cairns.

“As a club we need to continue to play our role in developing our game throughout North Queensland, a key recruitment catchment for the Suns Talent Academy.

“Over the last two years we have drafted both Jack Bowes and Jacob Heron from the region, alongside inaugural Gold Coast Sun Jarrod Harbrow, who has played over 100 games for the club.”

While at Cairns’ Biggest Sign On Day, Evans, the former AFL football operations general manager, had a long meeting with Cairns Mayor Bob Manning.

Heron, an exciting firstyear midfielder, was also on hand on Saturday.

Tickets for the Round 1 clash against North Melbourne went on sale on Saturday for the game at Cazalys Stadium to be played on Saturday March 24 at 6.25pm.

Gold Coast Suns members travelling to the game will have the opportunity to purchase tickets through the club to ensure they are all seated together.

Alternatively for those AFL fans in North Queensland, a Northern Sun Membership product will provide access to both the club’s JLT Pre Season match against Geelong in Townsville and a reserved seat at Round 1 against North Melbourne in Cairns, plus a host of other benefits.
