Crowe in tribute to great man Piggins
ONCE long-time foes, South Sydney’s Hollywood co-owner Russell Crowe has now described Rabbitohs legend George Piggins as a “great man”.
And Crowe admitted Piggins had “kept Souths alive”.
Crowe sent a moving video tribute to Piggins’ benefit night in Sydney on Saturday in front of 550 guests.
The pair endured an acrimonious relationship after Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court bought Souths in 2006, with Piggins (pictured) walking away from his 42-year association with the club.
Crowe and Piggins have gently moved closer in recent years, with Crowe now offering a special and heartwarming tribute to Piggins during the testimonial bash.
Crowe, speaking from his property near Coffs Harbour, spoke glowingly about the contribution Piggins had made to South Sydney’s 108-year history.
“George, it’s been an incredible journey as a spectator and, hopefully I can say, as a friend of yours,” Crowe said.
“And being part in some small way of the magnificent achievements you made on behalf of South Sydney. And keeping us alive.”
Crowe said Piggins was a reason why he purchased the club for $3 million 12 years ago.
“As I have said before, many times, I stepped forward for Souths to do my very best to make sure the things that you had achieved as a player – and as an administrator – stayed relevant and stayed alive,” Crowe said. “And October the fifth, 2014, what a night (Souths’ grand final win). Fantastic experience for all of us to see South Sydney back on top with Johnny Sutton holding that trophy high.”
