Wayward Magpie cops indefinite ban
COLLINGWOOD’S Jordan De Goey has been slapped with an indefinite AFL suspension by the club after he was caught drink-driving over the weekend.
The Pies came down hard on De Goey yesterday after the Pplater returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.095 per cent after a random breath test in Port Melbourne on Saturday night.
He will not be considered for senior selection until he has convinced his teammates and coaches he has made meaningful changes to his lifestyle.
The 21-year-old was also banned from drinking alcohol for the rest of the AFL season, was fined $10,000 – and will make a further $10,000 donation to charity – and was directed to find employment away from the club for at least four weeks.
He must also take on a role with a charitable organisation and will train in the evenings with the VFL squad during that period.
“Jordan can have a long career with Collingwood if he commits himself wholly to his football but he could also have a very short career if he doesn’t,” Pies football chief Geoff Walsh said.
“The club, and particularly his teammates, want to see behavioural change. They need to be able to trust him.”
De Goey’s licence was immediately suspended and he was disqualified from driving for six months.
The incident comes a year after he was suspended for three games for lying to the club when he claimed a broken hand suffered in a bar fight in St Kilda was incurred while playing with his dog.
