WE RATE TOP PUBS

- DANIEL BATEMAN daniel.bateman@news.com.au

WHAT makes a great pub?

Is it the drinks? The clientele? The atmosphere? The size of the chicken schnitzels?

Nope, it’s all about the scenery. And when you live in North Queensland, man, are there some stunning waterholes. Here is some local favourites for you to check out:

THE SALT HOUSE

If you have guests from down south, they are going to be wowed by the Salt House. This is the ultimate tropical venue with its spacious outdoor area filled with plenty of seating for you to sip a mojito and enjoy the spectacular view of the mountains, the ocean, and the Cairns marina.

STRAIT ON THE BEACH

This is a little beach charmer, where you can bring your dog after you’ve been for a walk along Holloways Beach. The beer garden is one of the most eclectic in Cairns with hand-carved furniture and a thatched roof giving the joint a distinct Balinese vibe. Being at one of the less popular northern beaches is a blessing, too. You are almost guaranteed the best seats in the house.

ELLIS BEACH BAR & GRILL

Another best of the beaches, this one is easily the most accessible, as it is right on the Captain Cook Highway. The bar overlooks one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. Despite being on a busy road, there is a very relaxed atmosphere here, particularly at sunset. Just be careful crossing the highway if you go to check out the beach.

THE COURTHOUSE HOTEL

What is there not to love about “The Courty” at Port Douglas? On the corner of Macrossan and Wharf streets, overlooking Anzac Park and the harbour, it has a reputation as being one of the most iconic pubs in the Far North. The hotel is a classic to look at, too, with its Queenslander facade and wide-open verandas, which are lifesavers on an especially humid day.

THE LIONS DEN HOTEL

It may take a while to reach it, but there is a lot to love about this pub in the rainforest.

The Lions Den is a mustvisit stop for anyone travelling the Bloomfield Track between Cape Tribulation and Cooktown. Regarded as a landmark, the Rossville hotel is set on the lush banks of the Little Annan River and surrounded by ancient mango trees. The interior of the pub is an ode to every traveller who has wet their whistle in the nearly 150 years its doors have been open.

KING REEF HOTEL

Another pub off the beaten path, the King Reef at Kurrimine Beach is well worth a visit. Located about 12km north of Mission Beach in a sleepy fishing hamlet, this hotel is as easygoing as it gets. It is right on the beach and you may be tempted to stay a little longer in one of the resort’s beachside cabins.
