Plenty of tickets to big show

COMMONWEALTH Games administrators anticipate a late rush for basketball ticket sales with about two-thirds of Cairns Convention Centre seats still to be filled.

GOLDOC chief Mark Peters was in Cairns yesterday as the games countdown hit the 30-day mark.

“Cairns does a bit of a rush at the end but there’s certainly plenty of tickets available and there’s going to be some great basketballers here,” he said.

“We know some people thought after the initial tickets sales, where it was by ballot, that we’d sold out. That’s not the case. In the Gold Coast it was about finals selling out.”

Across the entire sporting spectrum about 160,000 out of 1.2 million tickets are still available.

Mayor Bob Manning was confident Cairns was prepared ✔ to host Festival 2018 alongside the games, the biggest festival the council has ever put on.

“Over the last couple of years we’ve placed a fair emphasis on events and events tourism is a big part of our market now,” he said.

“This is really just another example of that.”

Clarence House has confirmed Prince Charles will attend a women’s basketball match in Cairns during his tour of Queensland but the exact game is under royal seal.

Cairns Taipans captain Cameron Gliddon, tipped for a spot on the Australian Boomers squad, said the atmosphere would be electric at the convention centre.

“When the stadium gets loud and full, it’s great – our fans are crazy,” he said.
