Joint bid delivers program
The small community of Wujal Wujal has rallied to launch a firsttime boxing program aimed to improve health, fitness, focus and motivation. Over eight weeks a range of boxing classes will be on offer for anyone looking to positively impact their wellbeing. My Pathway and Cape York Boxing have collaborated to deliver the program and hope to train local boxing mentors who can carry on the positive work beyond the initial training period.
THE small community of Wujal Wujal has rallied to launch a first-time boxing program which aims to improve health, fitness, focus and motivation.
Over eight weeks a range of boxing classes will be held for anyone looking to improve their wellbeing.
My Pathway and Cape York Boxing have joined to deliver the program and hope to train local boxing mentors who can carry on the positive work beyond the initial training period.
My Pathway operations manager Paul Carney said the idea started as a way to get people fit for work, but quickly expanded to include the whole community.
“We initially looked to boxing as a way to assist people improve their fitness for jobs in mining, construction or defence forces,” he said.
“We quickly realised the benefits are wideranging and should be shared with the whole community.”
Mr Carney said the Wujal Wujal program would include sessions for job seekers, work crews, schoolchildren, young people and women.
“There’s something for everyone to get involved,” he said.
“Remote communities like Wujal Wujal don’t always get a lot of choice when it comes to social and fitness options, so we wanted to bring something different to the region.”
Cape York Boxing trainers Beaver Brophy and Ken Dalton will be delivering the program, which extends beyond the technical training. Participants will learn how to incorporate exercise and healthy habits into their lifestyle and have fun while maintaining positive behaviours that assist them to be more productive.
The boxing program is made possible by the Community Development Program, delivered locally by My Pathway, Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council, Hopevale Foundation and Gungarde Community Centre.
