RUGBY UNION THE Northern Beaches Mudcrabs have appointed a teacher in training to help lead their young charges back to the finals this FNQ Rugby season.
Prop Cameron Scott will co-captain the team, learning on the job alongside club stalwart, Russell Todd, who led the team last season.
The club made the announcement at training on Tuesday night ahead of the competition’s major preseason hit-out at Edmonton on Saturday.
Scott, in his final year of a teaching degree, said the opportunity was humbling.
“When I was asked, I didn’t hesitate,” he said. “I was really excited when the club offered it to me.
“I think there’s good support around the Crabs for me and it will help me improve my leadership.
“We’ve got a lot of young, new players who have a lot of good energy and it’s really invigorating to be around.”
I WAS REALLY EXCITED WHEN THE CLUB OFFERED IT TO ME. I THINK THERE’S GOOD SUPPORT AROUND THE CRABS FOR ME AND IT WILL HELP ME IMPROVE MY LEADERSHIP.
Head coach Dan Moevao said the two leaders would complement each other well, with Todd expected to miss several matches this year due to work commitments.
“Russell is a mature player who’s very passionate about our club,” Moevao said.
“He’s been around and a leader for a few years now.
“He’s earned respect from the players so he’s was an obvious choice.
“He has good fitness for a frontrower and he’ll continue to lead from the front.
“I’ve coached Cameron before and seen him grow and he’s really stepped up and is driving training with his enthusiasm.
“We think he’ll have a big impact on the field for us.”
After winning just four games last season, the Mudcrabs have recruited heavily and are tipped by many rugby followers to return to the final this season.
Scott said experienced players will receive better support this season with the Crabs bullish about their young fry.
“We have a few battle-tested players that are veterans, but I don’t see why we can’t have a real crack at winning the competition,” Scott said.
“One of our new young flyers, Bevan Reynolds, is a really hard trainer and looks like he’ll be a special player within the FNQ Rugby competition.”
The preseason competition starts at Peterson Park on Saturday.
“We just want to try to get our shapes, formations and combinations right,” Scott said.
“But we’ll definitely have a crack.”
