Soiree to shoot for the stars

Victim’s jaw broken in unprovoked attack Old offence charges

- JACK LAWRIE

CAIRNS Artistic Photography group will hold its fourth Social Shoot Soiree on Saturday, the first shoot to be supported by local government.

The CAP is a collection of artists from the region, brought together by a common passion.

Group founder Marc Steiner said when he arrived in Cairns, the art scene was focused on nature and landscape photography.

“I wanted to bring more cosmopolitan ideas of art to this town,” he said.

With the help of Event Coordinator Jen Frei, CAP’s Social Shoot Soirees are a spontaneous event, where models are “released” into the space for artists to shoot.

As a result of the government support, the themes of the fourth Soiree will be toned down slightly..

Those looking to get involved with the group can apply for membership via Facebook. WITH one punch, Innisfail man Michael John Evans broke his neighbour’s jaw.

As a result of the unprovoked one-strike attack, the victim suffered significant injuries. He needed surgery to insert plates and his jaw had to be wired shut to avoid permanent damage.

Evans confronted the victim, whom he didn’t know, early on December 6, 2015, as the man spoke to a taxi driver.

“You were intoxicated, swearing, aggressive, you confronted him,” Judge Dean Morzone QC said. Things escalated and Evans threatened to take the victim out.

“As he tried to step by you punched the side of his face and threatened that it was just the start,” Judge Morzone said.

“You also blocked his return to his house.”

The Cairns District Court was told the victim did strike out at Evans fearing another attack. When the victim was in hospital, Evans went to his home and threatened his wife.

Evans’s barrister, Stephanie Williams told the court that Evans suffered from post traumatic stress disorder from his time in the Australian Army.

Evans, 46, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm as well as breaching a domestic violence order. He was jailed for two and a half years with immediate parole. He had served 163 days in custody. A 20-YEAR-OLD Westcourt man will face court later this month in relation to a number of outstanding matters dating back as far as 2011.

The man had been arrested over another matter in Enmore St, Manoora around 1am Sunday and was interviewed by Cairns Property Crime Squad officers. He was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle at Bayview Heights in May 2011, breaking and entering a Mooroobool school and burglary of a Manoora residence in April and October of 2013, and the July 2016 break and entry of a Manunda sports club. He is expected to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on March 28.
