Injury woes for Pies
COLLINGWOOD could have more bad AFL injury news with speculation that Tyson Goldsack could be out for the season.
The Magpies were sweating on the results of more scans yesterday, after Goldsack hurt a knee during Saturday’s preseason win over the Western Bulldogs. There was no indication during or after the game that Goldsack had suffered the injury.
But the fear is that the popular tall utility has damaged an anterior cruciate ligament, potentially meaning a seasonending reconstruction.
Slater not quite ready
KELLY Slater says he had to resist temptation to return to World Surf League action too soon, pulling out of the Gold Coast season opener as he recovers from foot surgery.
Slater missed a much-hyped first round Quiksilver Pro matchup with Mick Fanning on Sunday then announced his withdrawal yesterday ahead of his elimination second round heat.
His place was taken by South Africa’s Michael February, with Slater joking he deserves a 10 per cent caddy fee if February goes on to win the Gold Coast event.
Casey upstages Tiger
ENGLISHMAN Paul Casey has upstaged Tiger Woods to claim his first US PGA Tour win in almost nine years with victory at the Valspar Championship.
World No.17 Casey shot a closing six-under par 65 to finish at 10 under 274 to win by one shot from Woods, who shot a 70, and fellow American Patrick Reed (68).
“Today wasn’t quite as sharp as I would like to have had it but I had a good chance at winning this tournament,” Woods said.
