Hunt for stolen jet skis
Two machines worth $45,000 still missing
A CAIRNS business owner is pleading for public assistance after two jet skis worth about $45,000 were stolen from his Lyons St store.
Troy Duncan of Duncan Powersports arrived at work on Monday morning to find two brand new SEADOO jet skis that were still in their bright yellow crates missing from the premises.
He said looking at CCTV footage from his shop and surrounding businesses, two men were first seen at the premises at about 11.30pm Sunday, before returning at about 2.30am to 3am Monday.
He said the security cameras showed the two men loading the jet ski crates onto a flatbed trailer before driving away in a white Toyota LandCruiser ute.
“I need them back, I’ve got one sold,” Mr Duncan said.
“I’ve got all the hope in the world that we’ll get them back, but my biggest fear is that they’re going to realise what heat is on them and they’re going to go dump the skis and burn them. If they get them back and they’re slightly damaged I can fix that, but when they’re burnt they’re a writeoff.”
Mr Duncan said the jet skis, which had retail values of about $27,000 and $18,000, would be useless to the alleged thieves as they had not been decoded for use.
“They can’t do anything with it, they can’t even turn it on,” he said. “And that’s the biggest concern, when they realise they’re no good, I hope they don’t dump them.”
Mr Duncan said since posting about the theft on social media he’d received comments that the ute and trailer had been spotted travelling south towards Innisfail.
Police investigations the theft continue. Anyone who may have seen the vehicle or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Policelink on 131 444.
