MAULING SHOCKS
Council investigates claim dachshunds attacked chihuahua-cross
MANDY Andrejic is living in fear for her pets’ lives after her 12-year-old chihuahua-cross Jazz was viciously mauled by her neighbour’s four dogs.
The English St, Manunda, resident said she had gone to the shops with her husband for about half an hour on Thursday evening.
When she returned she saw the four dogs in her backyard “thrashing” Jazz.
“We had to rush her to the vets straight away. There was blood everywhere,” Ms Andrejic said.
“It was horrific. We’ve had her for 12 years and thought she wasn’t going to make it.”
“The vets tried to get her into surgery straight away but they had to wait because she was in shock.”
Jazz is now recovering and learning how to walk again, but Ms Andrejic said she had been left with a staggering $1455 vet bill.
She said she feared her other dog could be next.
“Our dogs are now confined in our home, I don’t want to let them out again,” she said.
“The palings have been secured but the dogs could easily get under the fence.”
Ms Andrejic said she was hoping for the animals to be destroyed by the council.
“We thought the fence was secure, but the dogs got in anyway,” she said. “We thought we would lose her.
“You just can’t have that many vicious dogs around.”
A Cairns Regional Council spokeswoman said Ms Andrejic immediately reported the attack to the council.
“Council received a report of a dog attack at Manunda … on Thursday evening and officers were able to attend the location within 20 minutes of the call,” she said.
“The complainant reported that a chihuahua-cross had been attacked by four dachshunds from a neighbouring property.”
She said the council was working on resolving the case with both Ms Andrejic and her neighbour co-operating with investigations.
“Council officers have spoken to both dog owners and investigations into the incident are continuing,” she said.
