LNP seeks crime input
People urged to register for public forum
VICTIMS of crime and Cairns residents tired of the endless theft and destruction of property throughout the region can voice their frustrations at an LNP-run crime forum.
LNP police spokesman Trevor Watts said the youth crime issue in Cairns was “out of control” and the forum would give people a say.
“It’s key for the people of Cairns to be able to voice their issues and concerns about what’s going on in their town,” he said.
“The youth justice system has been in three years of chaos with youth detention centre riots and lockdowns and the continual bungling of whether 17-year-old offenders will be in adult prisons or youth detention centres.”
PCYC Manunda branch support officer Corey Jamieson said the youth-based notfor-profit would take feedback from the community on board.
“We’re all for youth at PCYC. Having a forum where people can express what they need in their community is important,” he said.
“It’s good that people will have a chance to tell police and leaders what’s happening around town.”
LNP leader Deb Frecklington said almost every Cairns resident had been touched by crime.
“The police statistics in Cairns are shocking and don’t lie,” she said. “Behind every car theft or break-in is a human tragedy and a victim who is picking up the pieces.
“Community safety is being taken for granted in Cairns and residents have had enough.”
The Cairns Community Crime Forum will be held on Monday, March 26 from 11am to 12.30pm.
But the location of the forum is only available to people who register for the event.
Advance Cairns, the Queensland Police Service and community group representatives have been invited.
