Battalion training

SOLDIERS from the Cairns-based 51st Battalion, the Far North Queensland Regiment, will be completing a training exercise around Cooktown in the coming weeks. They will take part in a week-long exercise focusing on surveillan­ce and border patrol training, centred around the Endeavour River between the Cooktown Wharf and Marton. Residents are advised not to be alarmed if they see armed soldiers in uniform moving on foot, in vehicles or by boat, or hear shots fired during the day as the troops will be using blank rounds during the exercise.

Indigenous marathon

FOUR Aurukun youths will be sponsored by the Indigenous Marathon Foundation to join the 2018 National Indigenous Deadly Running Championsh­ips in Uluru on Saturday, June 16. To be selected you need to have a high attendance record at school and commitment to the Aurukun Deadly Runners Club. The club meets every Wednesday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the PCYC for a session on the rugby field. All levels of fitness welcome.

Cruising along in May

SEVEN Seas Voyager cruise ship due in Cooktown at the weekend was cancelled due to high winds. But the Far North town will welcome its next cruise ship, the Insignia, on Friday, May 4. The ship is expected to arrive at 8am, with more than 820 passengers on board.
