Practice crash puts downhill campaign on hold

-

A BAD crash has Cairns mountain bike rider Tracey Hannah waiting for medical clearance to participate in the latter stages of Crankworx Rotorua.

The 29-year-old went over the handlebars and into a tree in practice over the weekend and failed an initial concussion test, ruling her out of the Redwoods Downhill race to start the carnival in New Zealand.

Hannah will have a followup consultation today in a bid to prove her fitness for the conclusion of the event. Practice for the main Rotorua downhill starts on Thursday.

She told mountain bike website Pinkbike: “I’m supersad, that’s why you can see I’ve shed a few tears. I’m a little bit sad but at the same time I don’t want to encourage anyone to continue with a head injury and I think they’ve made the right call.

“It’s weird because now I actually feel fine and I’m really bummed,” she said.

■ FORMER Rovers cricketer Jasper Sumner is hopeful of leading Norths to a win in the Brisbane fourth grade grand final against Valleys.

The legspinner could do worse than his semi-final form, where he took 4-28 off 16 overs against University.

Sumner had been second grade for much of the season and almost found his way into the top side until the final few rounds. He has averaged 12 in fourth grade so far in 2017-18 and 15 across grades two to four.

■ Aron Baynes’ latest attempt to make his first threepoint basket of the NBA season has once again fallen short with the Boston Celtic now 0-11 from behind the arc.

The Mareeba big man, a solid mid-range shooter, missed another attempt against the Orlando Magic last week but has already shot more than three times as many attempts from beyond the three-point line than any season prior.
