FAR North football prodigy Mary Fowler is about to “set the world on fire” and a Young Matildas debut is just the start according to her former coach.
The 15-year-old impressed former A-League coach Gary van Egmond at a training camp last week for the under-19 side and made a stirring start to her international career.
Fowler’s effort included a thumping shot in the 77th minute, which forced a save from Thailand’s goalkeeper that landed in the path of teammate Amy Sayer to secure a 2-1 win in Sydney.
Stacey Fittock, who coached Mary and her brother Quivi at Leichhardt FC, said she was right to have ambitions of becoming a senior Matildas star in the future.
The FFA has noted her ability just in time after earning a shot at the Irish junior system before the family returned.
“She has aspirations to be the best Matilda and I’m sure she has the possibility to reach that goal, ” Fittock said.
Quivi Fowler was on Monday named in the NSW NPL Team of the Week after starring for the Wollongong Wolves, scoring the only goal to beat Rockdale City Suns 1-0.
The teenage star showed all the skills of two years abroad after being signed to Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem when he was just 16.
“I always thought he was very talented but his biggest talent to me was an ability to do hard work,” Fittock said.
“A lot of kids are athletic and can dribble and score goals and that but I don’t recall any who worked as hard as him.”
