Wet and wonderful

AFL chiefs have praised thousands of Cairns footy fans for braving the elements, praying that top teams will return to the Far North.

Umbrellas dotted Cazalys Stadium on Saturday as 3722 people stuck out the torrential rain brought on by Cyclone Nora for the clash between Gold Coast and North Melbourne.

Numbers were slow to trickle through the gates for NOT even torrential rain was going to stop Mareeba woman Allyson Holm from watching the Gold Coast Suns play.

She travelled from Mareeba Saturday, arriving as the rain began to pick up. With her team’s colours on display, she remained upbeat as the rain saturated Cazalys Stadium.

“We had these tickets booked for a couple of months,” she said. “Nothing was keeping me away.”

Rather than cursing the wet weather, Ms Holms said she loves it.

“We don’t see much rain in Mareeba so this is great.”

Her hope was to see the Suns in the top eight this year.

“I love them. I grew up in Victoria, so it’s my game,” she said.

“There should be two or three home games a year. They need a big support base here.

“It’s good to see a game like this being played in Cairns and it’s good to see that they’re bringing the young one through … and bringing young ones from the outer communities.”
