ATHERTON’S HISTORIC WIN

- JACOB GRAMS jacob.grams@news.com.au

AFTER all the highs and lows of the past decade, Gerard Fox could not be prouder of the way Atherton has paid tribute to the players who started it all 30 years ago.

The Tableland town will be rocking for days following the two-day grand final win and the star batsman said it meant a lot to anyone who had pulled on the Atherton shirt.

“It means a whole lot. Everyone plays with so much pride coming from Atherton,” Fox said.

“That 30th anniversary from coming out of the bush and into the competition ... the guys who started the club, it means a lot to them and everyone in the community.”

But the revival may not have happened without three modern-day stalwarts.

“It’s a long time between drinks for us,” Fox said.

“The club has been struggling for numbers for years. Me and Pete Sceresini and Dan Parnell, we’ve been here through the highs and lows for the club, so it’s great to have won three from three.

“After winning the T20 and one-day finals ... the confidence we got out of that made us virtually unstoppable.”

Fox said it was a wellearned two-day final win over Mulgrave despite the rain intervening.

“I just feel like the only time they had control of the game was when they won the toss and sent us in on a road,” he said. “After that, they weren’t in it.”

Club legend and coach Ken Shanahan said he “didn’t see it coming” and paid tribute to the 14 core players who made the triple crown happen.
