Ernst delivers as underdogs triumph
MOSSMAN’S Tiarna Ernst is used to delivering bundles of joy to the world, so it was perhaps no surprise that the reliable defender helped bring home the premiership cup for the Western Bulldogs at the weekend.
Dr Ernst, a former Manunda Hawk star who specialises in obstetrics and gynaecology, guided the Dogs home in a thrilling AFLW grand final, where they emerged 4.3 (27) to 3.3 (21) victors over the Brisbane Lions at Ikon Park on Saturday.
An elated Ernst fought back tears speaking post-match, with the Western underdogs forced to win without inspirational forward Katie Brennan due to suspension.
“I couldn’t have done this without the support of my colleagues, my senior colleagues and consultants,” she said. “All the registrars have allowed me to take time off work, to not work weekends.
“I couldn’t have done any of this without their support and I’m so indebted to them.”
Juggling full-time work and playing AFL professionally was challenging, Ernst said.
“It’s go, go, go all the time,” she said. “I’m either at work or training. I’m just thankful I have a good work ethic.
“It’s a bit of a dream … I couldn’t have done it without the support of my friends and family.
“It’s all a bit surreal right now.”
The loss of Brennan had left the Dogs reeling, with the club contemplating challenging the two-match suspension in the courts.
“We just had to focus on ourselves,” Ernst said.
“We knew it was just another obstacle and that we had players that could play the role Katie had left.
“There’s so much belief within the players and coaches.
“We knew we could get the job done as long as we gave a hard, four-quarter effort.”
Ernst said she expected to be working all this week but hoped to squeeze in at least one more day of celebrations.
“I think I’ll have to check the roster,” she said.
