Dixon’s goal helps Power to opening round win

CAIRNS Saints junior Charlie Dixon booted one goal in Port Adelaide’s season opening victory over Fremantle on Saturday afternoon.

New recruit Jack Watts, with his sharp kicking, combined with full forward Dixon in the forward line – Watts leading the way for lead-ups, Dixon for contests.

The Far North big man collected 20 possession­s and took seven marks in a dominant dishelping play. The Power play Sydney this coming Sunday in the second game of the season.

■ EXPERIENCE­D Taipans big man Alex Loughton has not slowed down this off-season, the Perth Redbacks to a win over the weekend.

The veteran forward collected 19 points in 25 minutes of court time in the Redbacks 90-63 victory over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns. He also grabbed seven rebounds.

The Redbacks are 3-0 and at the top of WA’s SBL ladder after three completed rounds.

The win ends Loughton’s three-game stint in Western Australia.

■ THE Gold Coast Suns NEAFL side recorded a comfortabl­e 143-13 victory over Palm Beach Currumbin at Bond University on Saturday morning.

Cairns Saints junior Jacob Heron and a handful of other Far North products are in the Suns NEAFL squad for 2018.

■ FORMER Cairns Dolphin Cayla George will play for Melbourne Boomers next season.

One of the Australia’s most talented forwards, George has been a massive part of the Townsville Fire’s success, having played 78 games for the club including all three championsh­ips wins.

“I am super excited to be heading to the big smoke,” George said.

“Melbourne has developed into one of the most profession­al teams in the league, with huge crowds and great work behind the scenes.”
