Mate rapt as star steps out

Few people were happier to know Todd Carney (above) finally set foot on Barlow Park than Mick Nasser, but if things go the way he wishes, he may never see it in the flesh. There was more than enough Atherton support on his behalf on Saturday night, as well as the rest of the Northern Pride’s diehards, who have had weather and injury rob them of a chance to see the marquee recruit.

RUGBY LEAGUE FEW people were happier to know former Atherton Rooster Todd Carney finally set foot on Barlow Park than Atherton publican Mick Nasser, but if things go the way he wishes, he may never see it in the flesh.

There was more than enough Atherton support on Nasser’s behalf on Saturday night, as well as the rest of the Northern Pride’s diehards who have had weather and injury rob them of a chance to see the marquee recruit.

Nasser, who could not get to Cairns to watch the Pride’s win over the Cutters, has already done Carney’s bidding to the Cowboys, no doubt part of the reason why a contract is on NRL CEO Todd Greenberg’s desk awaiting approval.

The Pride are due to play an Intrust Super Cup match in Atherton in June, but the Barron Valley Hotel publican is not holding his breath the fiveeighth will be there, confident the former NRL star has done enough to earn another shot.

“Football’s a funny thing and things can change overnight,” Nasser said.

“If he gets the nod from Greenberg, he could end up in Townsville and get into some full-time training, which he probably needs to get back in the NRL, and he’ll be champing at the bit.

“He’s quietly confident he’ll get the final tick. I think he’s doing everything right as far as off field goes, as he done for the past few years overseas. Fingers crossed for him.”

Pride coach Ty Williams will today name a team to take on Ipswich Jets on Saturday with the major question mark over Cowboys’ allocation Murray Taulagi after he was treated for concussion on Saturday.
