Saints take points in first hitout of season after tough contest

SAINTS are off the mark in Agrade women’s hockey for 2018 but a tough fight from Trinity Stingers shows there is little between the four sides this season.

The competition fancies picked up a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Teneal Kelly and Shana Coyle in their first hitout of the season on Saturday.

Saints captain Katie Russo was pleased with the way her side withstood the pressure from their rivals, but hoped with time things would start to click at the right end of the pitch.

“We were happy we came away with the win and that’s the main thing I guess, but there’s still little things we need to work on,” she said.

“They gave us a bit of a run for our money defence-wise.

“We did do a lot of scrambling at the back, but we attacked and constantly got up in their half, which was nice.

“But at the start you’re always a bit rusty. We need to work on converting goals when we get up there.

“We create a lot of opportunities, a lot of balls that run through into the circle and over the preseason we have been working on converting those into goals.”

Brothers had a second draw in as many matches with a 2-2 result against Souths.

But it was a different story in the men’s A-grade as Brothers ran rampant over Souths 6-2, including doubles to Jacob Raymond and Jordan Riesen.

Brothers captain Matthew Sperring said it was great to see his young side buck the trend of the preseason and capitalise on their opportunities in front of goal, but would not expect many more one-sided results moving forward.

In the other match, Trinity Stingers were far too good for Saints with big guns Kyle Richardson and Callan Short both firing in the 3-0 victory.
