Former Marlin on target in British league win

FORMER Cairns Marlins captain James Mitchell put together his best game of the season recently in the British Basketball League, dropping eight points in a victory over Leeds.

The forward hit all his four shots on the way to eight points in the 83-52 win.

Mitchell played almost 14 minutes and racked up one steal, block and assist in Sheffield Sharks triumph.

■ BADU Islander Timakoi Bowie booted a goal as the Gold Coast Suns started their NEAFL season with a 20-point victory against Aspley on Saturday afternoon.

The Suns were full of AFLlisted players in the 11.10 (76) to 8.8. (56) win.

Gold Coast will travel to Mackay to take on the GWS Giants this week.

■ TAMURI Wigness and the Australian Crocs were too strong for China, 91-67, to claim the gold medal at the FIBA Under-16 Asian Championsh­ips.

The Far North junior ran the show for the Crocs on the way to 20 points, five boards and seven assists in a matchwinni­ng performanc­e.

Across the five games at the tournament, the Cairns guard averaged almost 15 points a game, shooting at 50 per cent from the field, including 40 per cent from deep, as well as four rebounds and assists.

The Crocs now travel to Argentina where they will take on the best in the world from June 30 to July 6.

■ CAIRNS teenager Kody Stattmann has been selected in the squad for the Australian Emus for their first preparatio­n camp ahead of the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Asian Championsh­ips held in Bangkok, Thailand from August 5-15,

Run from May 4-7 at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence, the Emus’ will have a combined camp with the Australian Under-17 team bringing 35 athletes together.
