Young gun follows masters

- JORDAN GERRANS

GOLF CAIRNS teenager Sean Florimo has used his school holidays how all golf fans should, taking notes from the best in the world.

The 13-year-old was on the couch on Monday morning watching the Masters from Augusta National Golf Club.

The younger brother of Will Florimo, who won his second Ray Howarth Memorial Open at Half Moon Bay Golf Club last year, counts Jordan Spieth as his idol.

“I have been playing for about 10 years now. My older brother got me into playing,” Sean said. “I just like the sport of golf. “Spieth is probably my favourite – I like the way he putts.”

Meanwhile, Half Moon Bay Golf Club at Yorkeys Knob last week presented an award to Chris Fry, who won the National Junior MyGolf Award for February of this year.

“Chris has been attending our Junior Clinics for 12 months and has come on in leaps and bounds,” Half Moon Bay Golf Club general manager Greg Ferry said.

“What makes his achievements even more special is that Chris suffers from cerebral palsy but does not let this slow him down. Half Moon Bay Golf Club encourages all abilities to play this great game.” JACOB Heron faces a nervous, but no doubt exciting, week in Western Australia with an AFL debut a possibility for the teenager.

With Gold Coast playing consecutive games in Perth against Fremantle and West Coast, the Suns sent three travelling emergencies, with Heron one of them, instead of playing in the NEAFL.

Let’s hope there are a few sore hamstrings around the Suns squad this week and Heron gets the call-up.

■THE under-17 Cairns Lions acquitted themselves beautifully at their Victorian Challenge over the last week.

The Lions knocked over AFL Goldfields first-up before making it two from two against the Eastern Football League on Saturday.

Centrals Trinity Beach junior Sam Lindenmayer and City Lions midfielder Branden Deslandes put on a show for the Lions.

GOOD luck to Cairns Post tipping guru Stephen Turner as he heads to Punt Road this week.

The AFL Cairns Masters stalwart has been invited to play in a Richmond legends game on Saturday.

The Tigers play Brisbane across the road later in the day, so it will be a huge thrill for a long-time Tiger man.

FAR North juniors Poppy Boltz, Allanah Phinnesea, Kitara Farrar and Tiarna Ahwang made strong cases for a spot with the Gold Coast Suns women’s team while playing in Coffs Harbour recently.

The quartet represented the Suns at the Northern States Academy Carnival.

Phinnesea was named the Suns best player and kicked a goal against Sydney while Ahwang kicked two majors against the GWS Giants.
