Siege breaks as man held

- ANDREA FALVO

A 49-YEAR-OLD man was taken into police custody after a three-hour siege at White Rock yesterday in which he allegedly held a woman hostage.

Police declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) at 2.30pm after responding to a domestic-violence incident on Kimba Close.

It’s understood the 49-yearold man was armed and inside the home with a woman.

Several emergency vehicles, including one from the Special Emergency Response Team, attended in an attempt to make contact with the man. Watch the video online at: www.cairnspost.com.au

The PSPA measure was revoked at 5.23pm.

No one was injured in the incident.

Nearby resident Tony Addley said it was usually a peaceful neighbourhood.

“We’ve lived here for 16 years and normally it is a really quiet area,” he said.

“I came home from work and saw it all blocked off. My wife said she heard sirens earlier this afternoon.”

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was unable to get home for about an hour due to the incident, having to wait on the side of the road.

She claimed her neighbour was the one that had alerted police of the initial domesticviolence incident after seeing a man drag a woman into a house by her throat.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
