A LITTLE bit of baby shampoo can go a long way towards keeping skin looking fresh and flawless.

Cairns makeup artist Alice McCaffrey swears by goodquality baby shampoos as an effective, affordable alternative to high-end gel makeup brush cleaners.

“It’s best to use brushes instead of your hands for makeup for sanitary reasons,” she said.

“But because we live in such a humid climate you do have to make sure that they’re clean.”

She said the best way to clean a makeup brush was by using a purpose-made makeup brush cleaning formula.

“You can use a cleaner gel or you can use any sort of gentle antibacteria soap or even baby shampoo, which does really well,” she said.

“You have to make sure you do it at least once a week, especially in this climate.”

She said the use of a brushcleaning mitt could assist in thoroughly removing old makeup and dangerous bacteria.

“Basically you just run your brush under some warm water with your soap and over the mitt and work it really well over the brush before letting it dry overnight,” she said.

“In between uses you can use a brush-cleaner spray. Just give it a spray after each use will keep them clean.

“You can use a brush-drying tree to dry your brushes hygienically upside down and helps to dry them all the way through. Otherwise you can put them on a bench top with the bristles hanging off the edge of the bench to dry that way.”

Ms McCaffrey said a couple of minutes of cleaning makeup brushes every week could prevent two unsightly problems many people who wear makeup face.

“If you’re using dirty brushes your foundation doesn’t go on as smoothly,” she said.

“It can also cause breakouts across your skin because of the germs and the bacteria buildup.

“You don’t want to put germs on your face every single time you do your makeup.

“If you do your makeup regularly you have to make sure you clean your brushes regularly too.”
