Longest road for shot at dreams

In fact, the 14-year-old Bamaga student and Cowboys hopeful is so committed to the sport that he travels nearly 1000km every fortnight just to play with in Cairns with Brothers under 15s.
“There’s no junior league in the Cape,” said mother Kitty Tabua.
“Instead of that happening, we registered him for Brothers in Cairns.”
Timacoy and his parents make the three-day trek together.
“Instead of sending him away from home, we are supporting him a bit differently,” Mrs Timacoy said.
“He knows we are working very hard for him.”
The trio drive to Cairns with a goal to score Timacoy a Cowboys scholarship and eventually to play rugby league professionally.
He has started training with Brothers and has played in a trial game.
“He plays the ball hard – we were very impressed with how he has been going so far,” said coach Traye Hodge.
“The dedication of his fam- loves Dr Steve Baker his ily is amazing. I’m dumbfounded.”
He said the rest of the team appreciated Timacoy’s effort.
“The boys had a look and were shocked that this boy went all that way to play,” he said.
Mr Hodge said that by training with the Cairns club, Timacoy would develop his skills further than he would have had he stayed in Bamaga.
“We can develop his skills and confidence,” Mr Hodge said.
“He’ll be used to playing with boys that are bigger than him.”
Timacoy takes it all in his stride. “It is very exciting,” he said. “The other players are very welcoming.”
