AN Atherton man who smashed the window of a police car and yelled that he wanted to go back to jail has been sentenced to nine months behind bars.

William Thresher, 27, appeared at Mareeba Magistrates Court last week charged with three counts of wilful damage and one of public nuisance.

The court heard the seasonal farm worker had been highly intoxicated on Tuesday night last week.

Thresher was seen walking past a home in Robert St, Atherton, kicking things and then threatened to harm a dog before making his way to Main St at about 9.30pm.

He then picked up a roadworks sign off the street and threw it at the window of the Domino’s Pizza outlet in Robert St causing damage.

The court heard Thresher then proceeded down Main St to the front of the police station.

He picked up a bin and threw it at a police vehicle parked on the street out the front.

He smashed the back window and dented a door.

Police said he caused $1982 worth of damage to the car.

Mr Thresher said he had been going through some terrible hardships with his partner at the time of his spree.

Magistrate Thomas Braes said the charges breached a probation order against him.

Mr Braes convicted Thresher, fined him $500 for the breach, ordered him to pay police $1982 in restitution and sentenced him to nine months in jail. His parole release date is set in July.
