Austin’s a winner in all manner of ways

-

CAIRNS Saints junior Austin Harris cleaned up at the 2018 AFL Male Diversity Championships last week.

After representing Queensland’s All Nations team, the talented teenager was selected in the World Team and was also awarded MVP for the carnival, player of all states award and Queensland’s best player.

Harris (right) qualifies for the All Nations team because of his Thai background. He may be a chance to play some senior footy in Saints later this year.

■FOR big-name AFL players going back to a local level, it’s nothing new to get plenty of verbal attention from the opposition and supporters.

Like many before him, Melbourne Demons champ Aaron Davey is experiencing that with Cairns City Lions.

Davey, however, needs to be smarter than what he was on Saturday against Cairns Saints, copping a yellow card and then being reported for taking too long to exit the ground. There are teens in that Lions side who look up to Davey and no doubt the playing-coach will learn from the Saints experience.

DEFENDER William Aisi was a welcome inclusion to Manunda’s backline in their tough loss to Port Douglas in Round 4.

Aisi started the season in the reserves and was back where he belongs at the weekend, but he did not have a family member with him.

Tyler Gorogo crossed from North Cairns to Manunda to play with his cousin Aisi this season but missed the game with a hamstring complaint.

“I have decided to move away from Cairns after this year and I made a deal with Willie a few years ago that I would play a year at Hawks with him,” Gorogo said. “I thought I better live up my end of the deal this year.”
