Left’s Kanye attack appalling

- Rita Panahi is a Herald Sun columnist

THE Kanye West-triggered meltdown among the media and celebrity class has been a joy to witness.

For a group that’s been in a permanent state of hysteria since Donald Trump became leader of the free world, the revelation that the most influential and arguably greatest artist of our generation is a Trumpite was more than they could bear.

The ensuing tantrum was as comical as it was unhinged.

Kim Kardashian wanted to “break the internet” with her bare buttocks but it was her prodigiously talented husband, Kanye, who last week broke the web and many feeble hearts and minds with his thoughts on politics, free thinking and fake news.

It’s rare for a celebrity to stray from the Leftie groupthink that afflicts the entertainment industry.

The new McCarthyism that sees those guilty of “wrongthink” sacked and ostracised would scare the bejesus out of most conservatives and libertarians.

Such is the hostility to any deviation from Leftist doctrine that those who don’t conform tend to remain silent or are bullied into submission.

And the anti-conservative echo chamber doesn’t just persecute those who are guilty of supporting Trump but also extends to those who refuse to publicly condemn him.

Taylor Swift has endured close to three years of bullying and vitriol for failing to publicly back Hillary Clinton and/or condemn Trump.

So, I guess the over-the-top reaction to West shouldn’t surprise anybody. What was surprising was the star’s refusal to be bullied or manipulated into retracting.

“Free thinkers, don’t fear retaliation for your thoughts,” he tweeted.

“You don’t have to agree with Trump but the mob can’t make me not love him. Obama was in office for eight years and nothing in Chicago changed. I’m not scared anymore. I’m not scared of the media. I’m not scared of the past and I’m optimistic about the future.”

The hysteria reached atomic levels when Yeezy posted a picture of himself in a “Make America Great Again” cap and Trump acknowledged the rapper on Twitter.

The media reaction went from derision to demonisation; the Washington Post published a piece questioning Kanye’s intelligence and another article came with the headline “Kanye West Doesn’t Care About Black People”. On social media the abuse was far more feral with supposedly tolerant Lefties hurling racial slurs.

Then the late night TV hosts, whose entire openers have become tiresome Trump-obsessed flotsam, joined in the fun.

Even celebrity friends such as singer and SJW John Legend tried to shame Kanye into recanting, telling him his support of Trump would damage his legacy and hurt his fans.

But worse of all, certain media outlets questioned Kanye’s mental health. It seems supporting the duly elected president of the US is now a diagnosable mental illness in the eyes of the least self-aware members of the commentariat.

It was all too much for Kanye’s wife, Kim, who posted: “To the media trying to demonise my husband ... your commentary on Kanye being erratic & his tweets being disturbing is actually scary. So quick to label him as having mental health issues … he’s a free thinker, is that not allowed in America? Because some of his ideas differ from yours you have to throw in the mental health card? That’s just not fair.”

West is a prime example of what happens to a member of a minority group when they reject Left wing orthodoxy; they are mocked, misrepresented, attacked and smeared.

Their intelligence, decency and mental state are questioned in an effort to dehumanise them and render their opinion inept.

It is an appalling form of racism that treats the black – or any minority – population as one monolithic mass incapable of varied viewpoints. The Democrats have relied on the black vote for decades and many would argue they have taken it for granted.

The truth is that if celebrity endorsement meant anything then Hillary Clinton would have won the presidency in a landslide.

Most people don’t give a stuff what stars think about politics – but what is important is the way individuals such as Kanye West are viciously attacked for the “crime” of deviating from Leftist doctrine.
