Call for rodeo girls to be reining Queen
Young women across the Mareeba Shire can now nominate for the 2018 Mareeba Rodeo Queen Competition. The queen competition is open to unmarried females aged 16-25 who live in the Mareeba Shire. Rodeo Association secretary Lee-Anne Brown said last year’s contestants wanted to come back and do it all again this year. “They have a lot of fun and it’s a good experience for the girls,” she said.
YOUNG women across the Mareeba Shire wanting to build their confidence and join one of the region’s long running traditions can nominate for the 2018 Mareeba Rodeo Queen Competition.
The rodeo festival queen competition started in 1959 and is open to unmarried females aged 16-25 years who live in the Mareeba Shire.
The entrants, along with the matrons of honour Frances Petersen and Karen Blakeney, will attend a range of functions as part of the 2018 Mareeba Rodeo Festival, which will kick off on June 30 with the junior cowpokes competition and ute muster.
This year’s rodeo queen entrants will be introduced to the public at the event as well as assist with the running of the day.
The rodeo ball will then follow on July 6, kicking off a varied weekend of sports and activities including the annual art show, bocce, tennis, bowls and golf.
Mareeba Rodeo Association secretary Lee-Anne Brown said she was looking forward to seeing this year’s entrants grow and develop their confidence throughout the two weeks.
“We had 12 girls last year but we’re hoping for more this year. We’ve already had interest come in,” she said.
“The girls from last year, one of the comments they made, was they’d love to come back and do it again this year.
“They have a lot of fun and it’s a good experience for the girls.”
The announcement of the 2018 queen, princess and most popular entrant will be made after the downtown parade on July 13.
The rodeo will then run at Kerribee Park from July 14-15.
