Dull walls get big lift, thanks to sea murals

- ALICIA NALLY

THE headquarters of a Cairns film club has been transformed in a nod to the film noir genre.

The Screen Culture Club house on Florence St was one of the 18 sites across the city to receive a mural as part of the Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans festival.

Veteran Far North artist Daniel Wallwork approached club co-ordinator Paul Barron to paint the front of the property and the side of a showroom before the festival. Mr Barron enthusiastically agreed.

“We love everything he does and so of course said yes,” he said. “We are the caretakers of the site, it was a squat.

“We don’t know how long it’ll be there. It is so unique that someone can totally transform the building.

“The Sea Walls project is so great for Cairns. We have had top level muralists here and it’s really creating a vibrancy.

“This is the beginning, the tip of the iceberg. When Mayor Bob Manning says he wants to make Cairns the arts and cultural capital this is exactly what we need to make that happen.”

Mr Barron was behind the light projection festival across Cairns in 2016 and said there was plenty of space in the city which could accommodate art.

The Sea Walls’ murals are mostly in the city centre, however artists have also been painting works at Babinda and Holloways Beach. Nearly 300 murals have been painted in 12 countries since the program began in 2014.
