Kitara learns from best in quest for big time
THE first AFL Women’s league best and fairest is guiding South Cairns teenager Kitara Farrar towards her dreams of making it in the big time.
The exciting Farrar again put in a starring role on the AFL Cairns big stage on Friday night as she received best-onground honours in the Cairns Post AFLCW challenge.
Farrar missed a game of club footy last month, away with the AFL Women’s Academy program, which gives future stars an eye-opener into the professional side of football during a week-long camp.
It is run by AFLW talent manager and Western Bulldogs premiership ruck Aasta O’Connor and Erin Phillips, the first ever AFL Women’s league best and fairest.
Farrar and the academy players took part in matches against VFLW sides Geelong and Darebin, in between training, leadership development and mentoring sessions.
The Cutters junior says learning from Phillips and O’Connor was perfect for her development.
“You really need to become elite and stick to the information that you receive in these camps,” Farrar said.
“It is pretty hard to be in Cairns here away from all the coaches but I am doing my best.
“But, to learn from AFLW players and professional athletes who have been there before, like Erin Phillips, it is getting me to become elite and get me ready for my draft year next year.”
