Northern Storm falls short in fight for glory

- JACOB GRAMS jacob.grams@news.com.au

CAIRNS players have helped the Northern Storm come within a whisker of battling for glory at the Hockey Queensland Super League at the State Hockey Centre in Brisbane.

After three wins in their first four games, the combined North Queensland team was sitting in second but a 4-1 loss to Brisbane Fury and other results not going their way meant they were left just one point away. The Cairns contingent included Brisbane-based players Mark Wilcox and Kane Posselt alongside Far North players Daniel Ginnaw, Daniel Pittendreigh, Brett Bor- resen and even Adam Catalano, who dusted off the boots once again.

Ginnaw was the only one to get on the board in the 4-3 win over Wide Bay Thunder.

South West Lumberjacks, who beat the Storm in the first game of the tournament, pipped them to second place.

The Northern Storm women, including Megan Boston, Heather Morris and Jade Gilbert, had to settle for fourth place in the competition.

Souths’ US import Morris was the only one to find a goal, one of three the team scored all tournament, in a 3-2 loss to Wide Bay Thunder.

But the competition finished on a high yesterday when the Storm beat star-studded Brisbane Blitz 1-0.

Players will return for the resumption of regular A-grade competition this weekend.
