A leisurely endeavour

Exploring new ways to put up your feet

IN a world driven by gadgetry and constant online connection, many holidaymakers choose to escape to the great outdoors to get away from it all.

However, this year’s Cairns Home Show and Caravan, Camping and Boating Expo will show that even the world of camping can benefit from the march of technology.

Cairns Showground will once again play host to the expo this weekend with exhibits from more than 160 companies.

It began 25 years ago as a show focused on leisure products around the home but Australian Events managing director Bob Carroll said focus had shifted over time to boating and outdoor activities.

“The way people buy their products has changed. There’s fewer small businesses and home shows have changed to reflect that,” he said.

“Back when I started the home show, you were lucky to find one major caravan retailer in north Queensland and no such thing as camper trailers.”

“The sorts of products on offer are vastly different, and even in the last five years we’ve seen substantial changes, we’re starting to see caravans with bunks, or beds, or a fridge, washing machines, toilets.”

Mr Carroll said this year’s expo would show how technology had started to integrate with leisure activities.

“On one hand, we’re seeing families wanting to disconnect from technology, but at the same time when they’re relaxing in the evening, they want those options,” he said.

“People still want access. They want to charge their phone, watch Netflix, that’s part of how we live.”

Entertainment at the event will include the Shimano Fishing Show with fishing presenter Dave Moss, backyard living talks with Fruit Forest Farm in the main pavilion, camp oven cooking demonstrations by ranger Nick and free rides for kids. The expo will be held at the Showgrounds from May 11 to 13, 8.30am-4pm. Adults $12, Seniors Card $10, children 16 and under are free with an adult.
