GETTING outside for a breath of fresh air is more important than just getting kids moving.

Sleep expert Cheryl Fingleson said playing outdoors was essential for kids’ sleep.

“As with most things, it seems our parents’ generation had the right idea: going outside and playing is one of the healthiest activities children – and parents – can do,” she said.

“Being active, especially in the afternoon, really helps us sleep better. It also makes us happier and healthier all around.”

She said reducing screen time and maximising play time worked wonders for little ones.

“If you can limit TV and device time to a small window in the morning or just keep it as a treat for weekends, I promise your child will sleep much, much better for it,” she said.

“Screen time in the hours before bedtime can really affect children’s quality of sleep and their ability to get to sleep.’

“I always tell new parents who come to me when their babies are having sleep difficulties: get outside in the afternoon. Putting baby in their stroller or a carrier and having a walk around the local area before the end of the day makes everyone feel and sleep better.”

She said Cairns families should take advantage of the cool weather to build in an outdoor activity session every afternoon.
