Ground-level war against pollution

- DANAELLA WIVELL

TRAVELLERS arriving in Cairns will be greeted with cautionary environmental messages stencilled on to Cairns Airport drains.

The Cairns Airport team worked with the Cairns and Far North Environmental Centre (CAFNEC) on Friday to complete drain stencilling around the airport terminals and carparks with the message “This drains to the Great Barrier Reef”.

Cairns Airport chief execu- tive Norris Carter said it was an essential message to pass on to members of the public and visitors to the region.

“The aim is to raise awareness of marine pollution and where it comes from,” he said.

“The drain stencils are an excellent reminder to people not to litter because everything that goes into drains ends up in the ocean, and here in Tropical North Queensland that also means the Great Barrier Reef.”

Mr Carter said the sheer volume of visitors to the region every year meant public service messages like the drain stencils were vital to preserve FNQ’s natural highlights.

“We are fortunate to live in this beautiful part of the world and the natural attributes we have here, such as the Reef, attract millions of visitors each year,” he said.

“This initiative is one of the ways Cairns Airport can contribute to environmental sustainability in our region.”

Stencils have also been applied to the Saltwater Creek catchment in the Cairns North and Edge Hill areas.
